Holland America Line offers their Mariner Society loyalty program for repeat passengers. Highlights for top tier levels include 50% discounts and free cruises.

In September 2009, Holland America Line re-launched their cruise loyalty program, the Mariner Society, for their repeat guests. The Mariner Society rewards HAL guests that have cruised more than once with rewards that include onboard discounts, a complimentary champagne brunch and even free cruises. Here is how the Mariner Society loyalty program works.

What is a Cruise Day Credit?

Many cruise lines' cruise loyalty programs only count the number of cruises that a guest has taken. Instead, Holland America Line’s program is based on Cruise Day credits, taking into consideration staying in a suite and onboard spending towards these credits, as well.

  • Number of Days Cruised – For each day cruised, Holland America adds one Cruise Day credit to the member’s account.

  • Suite Bonus – Guests that stay in a suite, qualify for double Cruise Day credits. For example, a guest who pays full fare for suite accommodations on a 7-day cruise will earn 14 additional Cruise Day credits.

  • Onboard Spending Bonus – For every $300 spent onboard by a member, one additional Cruise Day credit will be added to the member’s account. The spending bonus applies to money spent on shore excursions, specialty restaurants, spa treatments and more.

What are the Mariner Society Benefits?

Passengers are automatically registered in the Mariner Society at the moment their cruise is booked. This initial level of the cruise loyalty program is referred to as a Star Mariner. Then, the more cruises the member takes, and the more the member spends, the more credits are earned. Here is the breakdown of membership rewards.

Star Mariner – Upon returning for a second cruise, Star Mariners are entitled to benefits such as a 50% cruise fare discount on 3rd and 4th guests that stay in the same room. Star Mariners also enjoy a complimentary champagne brunch.

2-Star Mariner – After collecting 30 Cruise Day credits, repeat guests are also entitled to a 10% discount on HAL logo clothing sold in the onboard shops. The 2-Star Mariners are also given a complimentary photo of the ship.

3-Star Mariner – When repeat guests collect 75 Cruise Day credits, they receive the above benefits plus a few extra perks. 3-Star Mariners are also entitled to a 25% discount on specialty restaurant surcharges, wine packages and mini-bar purchases. These members are also given discounts on select spa treatments.

Best Mariner Society Rewards

The 4-Star Mariner is the highest tier of the Mariner Society loyalty program, having accumulated over 200 Cruise Day credits. In addition to the above benefits, 4-Star Mariners also enjoy a 50% discount on specialty restaurant cover charges and mini-bar purchases, a complimentary wine tasting session, complimentary laundry services, and free cruises for 3rd and 4th guests staying in the same room.

Members that have already achieved certain levels of the Mariner Society will not lose their status due to the program's re-launch. The main difference is the bonus Cruise Day credits awarded for staying in suites and spending money onboard. The new program will be implemented fleetwide by October 18, 2009.
