The Port of Venice is an embarkation port for eastern Mediterranean cruises with numerous transportation options that can be easily organized independently.

Featured on many Europe cruises, Venice, Italy is a popular cruise port. According to Venezia Terminal Passeggeri, the terminal operator for the Port of Venice, over one million cruise passengers call on Venice annually. Many passengers book their cruise transfers and airport transfers directly with the cruise line. But, the option to organize transportation independently is easier than one may think, and cheaper, too. Here is an overview of how to book cruise transfers in Venice independently.

Location of Venice Cruise Terminal

  • Passengers on Europe cruises that originate or end in Venice, Italy can use Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE). Most of the major airlines have regular arrivals and departures from this airport located on the mainland just north of Venice. Passengers may choose to head straight to the airport from their cruise, directly to the cruise terminal from the airport, or extend their stay at a Venice hotel.

  • The Venice Cruise Terminal has two main areas within the terminal. Larger ships use the Stazione Marittima which is the main terminal, while smaller ships may use the San Basilio terminal.

  • Although the cruise ship piers are within walking distance of the historic center, cruise line operators offer a frequent water shuttle from the Stazione Marittima cruise terminal to San Marco (St. Mark’s Square).

Transportation from Venice Marco Polo Airport

  • Airport Boat Shuttle – These run about once an hour and the scenic boat ride takes about 1.5 hours. From the airport it takes about seven minutes to walk to the water taxi pier. Pass by the water taxi pier on the way to the Alilaguna Lines ticket booth. Alilaguna offers a direct boat shuttle service (the Blu Line) from Marco Polo Airport of Venice to the Stazione Marittima for 15 Euros per person.

  • Land Taxi – It’s about 8 miles and about a 30-minute drive from Marco Polo Airport (VCE) to the city’s Piazzale Roma. It costs around 35 Euros. From the Piazzale Roma, take the cruise ship shuttle to the pier.

  • Water Taxi – This can be the most expensive option, costing around 100 Euros per boat, but the private water taxi can take passengers directly from the airport to the cruise port.

  • Airport Bus – For passengers looking to save money on transportation, the ATVO buses provide a bus service from Venice Marco Polo airport to the Piazzale Roma. The cost is 3 Euros per person which includes luggage and takes about 20 minutes. Once at the Piazzale Roma, passengers can take the free shuttle to the ship.
For cruises that start or end in Venice, most cruise lines offer shore excursions or transfers that include some type of sightseeing, too. For example, Princess Cruises offers a disembark transfer to the airport that takes 4 hours and costs US$129 per person. The excursion includes a walking tour with highlights such as St. Mark’s Basilica, Doge’s Palace, and the Bridge of Sighs before transferring to the Marco Polo Airport.
