When choosing a Mexican Riviera cruise, consider the differences in the embarkation ports of Los Angeles and San Diego such as the pre-cruise hotels and best attractions.
Although it’s easy to concentrate on the Mexican ports of call, when organizing a Mexican Riviera cruise, don’t forget that the embarkation port is also part of the cruise vacation. Here is some basic cruise port information for cruises out of Los Angeles’ San Pedro and Long Beach piers versus cruises from the San Diego cruise port.
Cruise Ship Port Information for the Port of Los Angeles
Location of the Cruise Port – There are two main areas of the Port of Los Angeles for cruise ships. The one in San Pedro Bay is about 20 miles south of Los Angeles Airport (LAX). This cruise terminal occupies Berths 91 to 93 at the World Cruise Center. The other cruise terminal is located at the Long Beach Cruise Terminal (231 Windsor Way), about 30 miles from LAX.
Getting to the Ship –If arriving from Los Angeles airport (LAX), expect a taxi to cost around US$40 to US$50 to get to either cruise ship terminal. Alternatively, the Super Shuttle from LAX provides a shared ride service to cruise ship hotels and to both Los Angeles cruise ship piers for about US$17 per person.
Best Pre-Cruise Hotels–The Long Beach area as well as the San Pedro area are the best locations for passengers looking for a hotel close to the cruise ship. Keep in mind that hotels in downtown Los Angeles or airport hotels are a considerable distance from the cruise ship terminals.
Best Attractions Near Port of Los Angeles – The Long Beach area offers attractions perfect for cruising with children such the Aquarium of the Pacific and nearby beaches. For historians, the former cruise ship, the Queen Mary is permanently docked in Long Beach, too. And, less than 30 miles away is the city of Anaheim, the home of Disneyland.
Cruise Ship Port Information for the Port of San Diego
Location of Cruise Port – About 127 miles south of Los Angeles is the Port of San Diego. Cruise ships dock at the B Street Cruise Ship Terminal on N. Harbor Drive near Ash Street. This is also the epicenter of the downtown area. The San Diego Airport (SAN) is only about two miles from the cruise ship pier.
Getting to the ship –Taxis from the San Diego Airport to the cruise ship terminal cost around US$8. If driving to San Diego, note that passengers cannot park at the pier while on a cruise. There are a number of offsite parking lots to choose from, though. The Park and Go (2535 Pacific Highway) charges $10 per day and offers a shuttle to the cruise ship pier.
Best Pre-Cruise Hotels – For hotels closest to the San Diego cruise ship pier, stay near Harbor Drive on San Diego Bay (the Embarcadero area). Or for even more luxurious resorts, stay on Coronado Island.
Best Attractions Near the Port of San Diego – Balboa Park is the main tourist area of San Diego, home to the San Diego Zoo and a number of museums. In addition, on the north side of San Diego, there is a SeaWorld.
The Mexican Riviera is a year-round cruising destination and is offered by most of the mainstream cruise lines. Both Los Angeles and San Diego are used by cruise ships heading to Mexico on similar itineraries. The only difference between these cruises is the embarkation port itself.
